The MLAS Maritime Mooting Competition serves as a platform to encourage law students, as well as those who are about to embark on a career in law, to study maritime law and/or to embark on a career as a maritime lawyer.

The Finals of the 5th MLAS Maritime Mooting Competition was held in David Marshall Moot Court, SMU Yong Pung How School of Law on 18 January 2023.

Testimony from Chua Rui Yuan, Winner of 5th MLAS Maritime Mooting Competition on his experience for the all-expense paid 2-weeks internship with 7KBW in London:

“The MLAS Maritime Mooting Competition was an enriching experience, for which I am grateful to the organisers and sponsors for. Although the prospect of engaging with a specialist area of law before panels constituted by subject-matter experts was certainly intimidating, I was met at each stage by a community who were not only learned and passionate about the law, but graciously willing to share their wealth of experience and advice.

I am also grateful to 7KBW for sponsoring my attachment at Chambers. The opportunity to meet various members of chambers and to watch them in action was a thoroughly eye-opening one. In this regard, I am especially thankful for the extra effort that was taken by Chambers to ensure variety in the advocacy to which I was exposed to, which included an appeal before the Court of Appeal, multiple hearings before the Commercial Court, and a commercial arbitration. Anyone interested in exploring and developing their interest and skill in advocacy would benefit from such an immersion in advocacy.

The Competition is nothing less than an excellent learning experience, and that fact alone means that, even speaking as someone who had no prior knowledge or experience in shipping or maritime law, it is one that I would commend to all who are eligible.”
